The Mexican senate now has until December 15, 2020 to make a decision regarding the nationwide legalization of cannabis.
The April 30th, 2020 deadline came and went with no decision made regarding the legalization of cannabis in Mexico. While the senate has voted to approve the legalization of recreational cannabis, the bill still awaits approval by the Chamber of Deputies and signing by president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Due to the current state of the Corona Virus pandemic, much of Mexico’s Legislature has been halted at this time, leading to further delays on this already delayed bill.
The original deadline for the decision was in October 2019. A “one-time” extension was granted when a resolution was not reached in time. If cannabis is legalized, Mexico will become the world’s most-populous country with legal marijuana.
