The Big Lebowski (1998):

The Big Lebowski is an iconic stoner movie by the Coen brothers that follows the story of Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, a middle-aged slacker who gets mistaken for a millionaire named Jeffrey Lebowski and is subsequently set up for a kidnapping. Throughout the course of the movie, The Dude embarks on a wild adventure filled with kidnappers, nihilists, and a host of oddball characters. The Dude is a character that many stoners can relate to; he believes in taking life slow, appreciating the little things, and of course, smoking to pass the time. His laid back attitude makes The Big Lebowski a must-watch for stoner viewers looking for a good laugh. Not to mention the stellar performances by Jeff Bridges and John Goodman, the classic dialogue, and the surreal dream sequences.

Pineapple Express (2008):

Written and directed by Judd Apatow, Pineapple Express follows the story of Dale (Seth Rogen) and Saul (James Franco), two stoners who are on the run from a crime lord after witnessing a murder. As they attempt to evade the police and the crime lord, Saul and Dale embark on a wild and bizarre adventure filled with tense situations, outlandish characters, and laugh-out-loud humor. The perfect mix of comedy and action, Pineapple Express is one of the most entertaining stoner movies of all time. It’s also notable for its fantastic performances by Seth Rogen and James Franco, as well as its colorful production design.

Cheech and Chong’s Up In Smoke (1978):

Cheech & Chong are two of the most iconic names tied to cannabis.

Cheech & Chong’s Up In Smoke is a cult classic film starring the comedic duo Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. The movie follows the two as they attempt to smuggle a van made entirely out of marijuana across the border. Along the way they face many obstacles including the police and a variety of bizarre characters. Up In Smoke is a lighthearted stoner movie with plenty of comedic moments and sight gags. It is thought of fondly by many stoners for its wacky humor, Cheech & Chong’s great chemistry, and its memorable soundtrack. In fact, the one Cheech & Chong original, performed by them at the end of the movie, was covered by the nu-metal band Korn as a secret track on their 1998 album, “Follow The Leader”.

Friday (1995):

Friday is another classic stoner movie starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. The movie follows two stoners, Craig and Smokey, who spend the day trying to raise enough money to pay off a drug dealer before he comes to their house. The movie is filled with laughs and quotable lines, as well as a stellar soundtrack featuring the likes of Dr. Dre and Cypress Hill. Friday is a classic stoner comedy about two friends trying to have a good time and the various hijinks they find themselves in.

Half Baked (1998):

Half Baked is an American-comedy film starring Dave Chapelle, Jim Breuer, Guillermo Diaz, and Harland Williams. This cult stoner comedy follows three New York City ‘potheads’ as they join together to sell massive amounts of marijuana obtained via unorthodox means in order to bail out their buddy from prison. Half Baked is one of the most iconic cannabis fueled movies of all time. It also features some memorable cameos by Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson, Jon Stewart, Tommy Chong, and Stephen Wright.

How High (2001):

How High is a comedy starring Method Man and Redman. The movie follows two pot-smoking college students, who use their special brand of marijuana to gain supernatural powers and ace their tests. The movie has become a cult classic for its outrageous comedy and outlandish premise. The film features an epic soundtrack, ranging in various genres, including Rammstein, Cypress Hill, and of course, Redman & Method Man. Almost 2 decades later, a sub-par sequel was released in 2019 featuring rappers Lil Yachty & DC Young Fly. We’re still waiting for the real How How

Dazed and Confused (1993):

If you’re looking for the quintessential stoner movie, it doesn’t get any better than Richard Linklater’s classic stoner comedy Dazed and Confused. The movie follows several high-schoolers during the last day of school in 1976 as they try to make it home without getting caught by the cops or the local bullies. The movie has a great soundtrack, impeccable direction, and an incredible cast that includes a young Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey. Regardless of whether or not you’re a stoner, Dazed and Confused is a classic that belongs in any movie collection. 

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004):

Harold & Kumar is a classic stoner movie that follows two best friends as they travel across New Jersey in an effort to get their hands on some White Castle burgers. Along the way, the pair get into all sorts of obstacles and interact with a colorful cast of characters, including a legendary cameo from Neil Patrick Harris, playing a fictional character of himself. Beyond the film’s cannabis fueled comedy, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle engages viewers with a surprisingly deep look at the issues of race and identity in America.

Supertroopers (2001):

A classic stoner comedy from the Broken Lizard comedy troupe, Supertroopers follows a group of misfit state troopers as they carry out their duties in rural Vermont. Though the movie is filled with outrageous antics and slapstick humor, it never fails to deliver a few zingers and fun one-liners. A perfect mix of humor and action, Supertroopers is the perfect stoner movie to watch alone or with a group of friends. 

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001):

The classic stoner comedy from director Kevin Smith and the View Askew universe, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back follows Jay and Silent Bob, two slackers on a mission to thwart a movie being made about them. The movie features memorable cameos from the likes of Will Farrell, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and J.K. Simmons, and it rarely fails to make viewers laugh. The movie also contains some interesting commentary on the power of media and pop culture.
