Coffeeshop Amsterdam originated as one shop in a chain of coffeeshops which included Amsterdam's Original Dampkring Coffeeshop as well as Coffeeshop Tweede Kamer. The first shop, Tweede Kamer, was established in 1985. In 1993, Dampkring's now famous Handboogstraat location opened with a second Dampkring location, formerly
"Pink Floyd Coffeeshop", joining the chain in 2007. After the Original Dampkring location changed ownership in 2011, the second Dampkring, located on Haarlemmerstraat, began to rebrand, becoming Coffeeshop Amsterdam in 2017.
Coffeeshop Amsterdam's sister location, "The Amsterdam Café from Coffeeshop Amsterdam" is a Bar located at Singel 8 in Amsterdam. Unlike Coffeeshop Amsterdam, this location serves alcoholic beverages, but not cannabis. Amsterdam Café is however smoke-friendly.
