Government Refuses To Discuss Cannabis Legalization In Spain

Yesterday afternoon, the Spanish Congress of Deputies rejected the measure proposed by Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC) to legalize the consumption of cannabis and regulate its medicinal, recreational, and industrial applications.

While the majority of Plural Group parties, including Unidas-Podemos, ERC, Ciudadanos, PNV, and EH-Bildu, voted in support of the motion, the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) simply refused to debate the legalization of cannabis in Spain.

Spain Government Refuses Cannabis Legalization

Due to the opposition of the PSOE and others, the measure could not be considered in the parliamentary chamber. The chamber refused to talk about the legalization of cannabis in Spain, discrediting its medical values.

“Cannabis use has been, is and will be a reality. Despite the fact that some try to sweep it under the rug. Despite the fact that they want to avoid the debate […] We make a proposal with the intention of achieving less consumption, more control, less addiction and less mafias,” Marta Rosique, an ERC delegate states.

The text rejected yesterday is one of three cannabis regulation laws that were filed in Spain in fall 2021. The first proposition to be voted on was Más Pas, which was defeated in October of that year. Now that the ERC’s plan has also been rejected, just the proposal lodged by Unidas-Podemos remains, for which there is still no vote date.
