Amsterdam, previously with two love lock locations, sees a new location for couples to symbolize their love with a padlock. Courtesy of American expat & local celebrity, Flower Bike Man, Love Lock Bike can now be found on a bridge where Museumstraat meets Boerenwetering canal, directly next to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
The reason for Flower Bike Man’s Love Lock Bike is symbolic. “I placed this #LoveLockBike to discourage the bridge locks. Many are unaware that the city regularly curs off the locks. Many are cheap metals and cause corrosion to the bridges which prompted the removals.” A sign inside the bike states, “The City Will Cut Your Love Away, Lock It Here For It To Stay”.
Love locks, known as symbols of love that are affixed to a bridge or fence, have become a world-wide phenomenon. All over the world, cities are seeing more Love Lock locations pop-up, like in Paris, New York City, and Wrocław.
Couples can stamp their love locks in Amsterdam at two other known locations. Staalmeestersbrug, a draw bridge crossing the Groenburgwal, has a picturesque view of the Zuiderker tower in the background. Another classic Dutch drawbridge, the Magere Brug (aka. Skinny Bridge), is a scenic location crossing the Amstel River.
We recently mentioned Magere Brug in our Ultimate Idea Guide for 2020 Valentines in Amsterdam.
