New York authorized recreational cannabis about 10 months ago, but the retail side of things has been reluctant to get started, to say the least. Adults 21+ and older may consume and possess it now, but without a medical license, can not legally source cannabis products.
There are no licensed recreational dispensaries operating in New York State at this time, and there are no rules allowing for home cultivation. Currently, still no timeline for recreational dispensary licensing is available. Retail sales of recreational marijuana are still under consideration by the New York Cannabis Control Board. Those wishing to open recreational dispensaries in New York State may not be authorized until spring of 2023, according to Tremaine Wright, the board’s head.
So where can you legally purchase cannabis products in New York?
We’ve previously discussed gifting cannabis to close friends. Aside from the fact that it falls into a very ambiguous category, raising unnecessary anxiety for some, it may also be difficult to source.
While New York State struggles to create a recreational market, many Native American tribes have taken it upon themselves to help people who are looking for cannabis goods. Adult-use dispensaries have started opening up on Native American reservations across New York State. Here, you can find a wide-assortment of tax-free cannabis products.
For individuals seeking alternative options, obtaining a Medical Marijuana Card New York can provide access to medicinal cannabis before the anticipated recreational market opens.
“Dispensaries are legal if they are on federally recognized, sovereign tribal land,” Freeman Klopott, the Office of Cannabis Management spokesman said. Recreational dispensaries on federally recognized sovereign tribal land are legal.
